Frequently asked questions

Does my homeowners insurance cover my bicycle?

Although your homeowners policy may provide some coverage for your bicycle, there may be restrictions based on your bike’s value and the types of losses that would be covered.

What if I buy a new bike?

Markel Specialty will automatically extend your current coverage to your new bike for up to 30 days from the day you purchased it. If you would like to keep the coverage for longer, just let Markel know during that 30 day time period.

Do you cover my apparel and spare parts too?

Your apparel and spare parts are covered only if you purchase bicycle physical damage coverage and your bicycle is involved in a covered loss.

Can I insure my electric bike?

Yes. Markel insures bicycles with an auxiliary electric power assist that does not exceed 750 watts and 28 mph. To learn more, please contact our agency.

How much coverage should I purchase?

It depends on the cyclist, bike and reasons for use. Your insurance coverage should reflect your unique needs. Please contact our agency to get your personalized quote.

Is my car rack covered?

Typically car racks are covered under your auto insurance policy. Reach out to your current auto carrier for coverage limits since Markel’s bicycle insurance policies do not cover car racks.

On average, how much would it cost to insure my bicycle for a year?

The cost of insurance is determined by many factors, including the coverages you choose, the type of bike you buy, and how you ride. To quickly find out how much it would cost to insure your bike, complete a quote above or call our agency.

Am I covered if I ride in a race?

Love to race? Just let us know when purchasing your policy, and you will be covered!

What if I am hit by a car while riding my bike?

Markel Specialty offers several coverage options to protect you and your bicycle. Coverage options include medical payments, vehicle contact protection, and bicycle physical damage protection.

Do I only have coverage in my state, or are cross-country bicycle trips covered too?

Markel’s policies allow you to ride in all 50 states as well as in Canada. Your bicycle is also covered while it's in transit (by land/air) to and from a location within the United States and Canada. You can also purchase an optional worldwide physical damage coverage extension.

Does my insurance cover a rental bike if I cannot use my insured bicycle?

Markel Specialty's bicycle physical damage coverage provides reimbursement for your rental in the event your insured bike is sidelined due to a covered loss. Markel does not provide coverage for renting a bicycle while on vacation.
